The habit of telling stories is deeply ingrained in the human race, dating back to the most ancient civilizations and even the most primitive of savages. Throughout history, stories have served various purposes, including religious, didactic, patriotic, and political. However, underlying all of these purposes is the fundamental human delight in the storytelling process itself.
One example of allegorical tales is the Æsopic Fables. These stories utilize the form of old animistic tales, but without any belief in the actual identity of the characters. Instead, they have a conscious double meaning and are used to impart valuable lessons. The fable is a product not only of folk tradition, but also of the learned, and while it may have been passed down orally at times, it is fundamentally a literary form.
Traces of this storytelling tradition can be found in narratives gathered from around the world and from the earliest recorded times. Whether for religious, didactic, patriotic, or political purposes, the human love for storytelling remains constant.
